Inklings #20: The Last Day Before Exile - Selin Bucak (ebook)
Stories in the media about displaced people, those running away from war and living in exile, are almost always accompanied by dehumanising statistics in clickbait headlines. But to truly understand what immigrants must often go through at the hands of governments and legislation, we need to put ourselves in the shoes of those who have to flee.
Where displaced people are so often presented as “waves” of immigrants, The Last Day Before Exile attempts to reframe the narrative to instead focus more on humanity. Selin Bucak shares the stories of immigrants who, during some of the hardest moments of their lives, must decide whether to stay or leave.
Tracing the steps of professionals who have moved from Gaza, Pakistan, Morocco, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, and Ukraine, Bucak explores previously unheard stories of rebellion, fear, and, in some cases, victory.
